Cambridge Innovation Center
Visit to the Cambridge Innovation Center
By Bruce Hemeon
To ensure that course offerings match the ever-evolving knowledge requirements needed for workers to stay current in today’s workforce, it’s important that the PDC meet with area business leaders to learn more about their organizations and stay ahead of industry trends. As part of this endeavor, Larry Elle and I recently visited the Cambridge Innovation Center (CIC). As this was my first time visiting the CIC, I arranged a tour with Sarah Morin, the CIC’s Assistant Director of Sales.
For those of you who aren’t familiar with the CIC, essentially it provides office space and a wide-range of business services and networking opportunities for small and start-up businesses in the area. According to its website, the CIC serves more than 600 companies with most of them start-ups in the technology and life sciences fields. While there are larger companies renting space in one of its two buildings in Cambridge (I was surprised to learn that Amazon has a small office there), the typical CIC occupant has between 1 and 15 employees. In addition to CIC’s original space located at One Broadway, it also has space at 101 Main Street in Kendall Square. The fact that CIC’s total office space has grown to 207,000 square feet really illustrates the amount of innovation and entrepreneurship in our area!
Another thing I learned about the CIC is that it hosts many networking and educational events that are open to the public. For instance, “Food for Thought” is a brown-bag lunch series, and throughout the week there are numerous classes and networking events where you can learn something new and mingle with others in our thriving innovation community. Every Thursday from 3-8pm there is a popular networking event held at the lively Venture Café located on the fifth floor of One Broadway. This is a great event where you’ll find engineers, scientists, developers, marketers, designers, CEOs and other members of the Boston startup community sharing ideas, gaining inspiration and making contacts. Larry and I toured the CIC on a Thursday so it proved a perfect opportunity for us to also attend an event at the Venture Café. It really started to fill up around 5pm; the crowd seemed to represent a wide-range of professionals across all ages and there was lots of engaging conversation going on. I look forward to hopefully attending another networking event soon!
